Former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh died on 26 December 2024 at the age of 92. He was suffering from age-related diseases and breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
Many leaders including President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi have condoled his death. Prime Minister Modi said that the death of Dr. Singh is a big loss for the nation and he will always be remembered as a learned economist.
The central government has announced a seven-day national mourning from 27 December to 2 January in his honor. During this time the national flag will fly at half-mast on all government buildings and no official entertainment program will be organized.
Dr. Manmohan Singh's last rites will be performed with full state honors near Rajghat in Delhi on December 28. His body will be kept for the last darshan at the Congress headquarters, where people will be able to pay tribute to him.
Dr Singh served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014 and played a key role in economic liberalisation as Finance Minister in 1991, opening up the Indian economy to the global market. He will always be remembered for his simplicity, erudition and devotion to the nation.
His demise has been met with an outpouring of condolence messages from across the country and abroad, reflecting the respect and reverence shown to him. The country has lost a great leader, scholar and true patriot.
Leaders from various political parties, social activists and the general public are attending the tribute meetings organised in his memory, expressing their deep condolences.
The demise of Dr Manmohan Singh is an irreparable loss to Indian politics and society, and he will always be missed.
