A woman was set on fire on a New York City subway train on December 22, 2024. Police have now confirmed that the woman was 57-year-old Debrina Kavam, a resident of Toms River, New Jersey.

At the time of the incident, Debrina was sleeping on the subway train when 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta-Kalil set her clothes on fire. It is alleged that Zapeta-Kalil further fueled the flames with a shirt after setting the fire, causing severe burns to Debrina and leading to her death.

Police said that it was challenging to identify Debrina, but she was identified through fingerprints, dental records and DNA evidence. Initially, it was difficult to establish her identity due to her burnt condition.

Sebastian Zapeta-Kalil has been arrested on charges of murder and arson.  Initial investigations indicated that Debrina and Zapeta-Kalil did not know each other. Zapeta-Kalil told police she had no memory of the incident, although she recognized herself in photographs and surveillance video.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams called the incident tragic and said it shows that people should not be in the subway system, but in a place of proper care.
