HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) is a virus that primarily causes respiratory infections. The virus is more prevalent in children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems. The virus usually causes the following symptoms:
Symptoms of HMPV
1. Mild fever
2. Runny or blocked nose
3. Sore throat
4. Cough
5. Difficulty breathing (in severe cases)
6. Fatigue and weakness
How does the infection spread?
The HMPV virus usually spreads when an infected person coughs, sneezes or touches surfaces infected with the virus.
Treatment and prevention
There is no specific antiviral medicine available for HMPV. The following measures can be taken to reduce the symptoms:
1. Rest and stay hydrated.
2. Use medicines like paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce fever and pain.
3. In severe cases, oxygen therapy may be needed in a hospital on the advice of a doctor.
Preventive measures:
1. Wash hands regularly.
2. Maintain distance from the infected person.
3. Wear a mask and avoid crowded areas.
If symptoms are severe or there is extreme difficulty in breathing, contact a doctor immediately.
