Tottenham Hotspur defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final played on 8 January 2025. 18-year-old Lucas Bergwall scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute, the first goal of his Spurs career.

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a head injury early in the match, after which he was taken to hospital. However, he was conscious and talking.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk expressed displeasure over a challenge made by him before Bergwall's goal, which he felt deserved a second yellow card. The incident also led to an argument with referee Stuart Attwell.

With this win, Tottenham have gained a significant lead towards reaching the final. The second leg will be played at Anfield on February 6, where Liverpool will try to make a comeback.

This match also saw a historic incident where the referee informed the spectators present in the stadium through the PA system that Dominic Solanke's goal had been cancelled due to offside. This was the first time in English football that the referee made such an announcement.

With this win, Tottenham have moved towards their first trophy since 2008. On the other hand, Liverpool's 24-match unbeaten streak has come to an end.
